THE SCHROTH METHOD

Pendulum.jpg

The Schroth Method is a conservative physical therapy approach aimed at treating scoliosis, a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine. It was developed by Katharina Schroth in the 1920s in Germany and has since been refined and expanded upon. This evidence based method involves specific exercises and techniques designed to elongate the trunk, correct spinal curvature, and improve posture. These exercises are tailored to each individual's curvature pattern and are only performed under the guidance of a trained Schroth therapist. This approach is recommended for children and adults diagnosed with scoliosis and other postural dysfunctions and is also prescribed for post-operative care for Spinal Fusion surgery.  The Schroth Method is often recommended as a complementary treatment alongside other interventions such as bracing or surgical options, especially for adolescents with moderate to severe scoliosis. It aims to improve quality of life, reduce pain, and prevent further progression of the spinal curvature.

SPECIALIZED EXPERTISE

A Schroth therapist is a highly trained and specialized healthcare professional who is certified in the Schroth Method - an innovative and evidence-based approach to treating scoliosis and other spinal deformities including Scheuermann's Kyphosis, hyperlordosis and flatback syndrome.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL CORRECTIVE EXCERCISES

These prescribed exercises focus on elongating the spine, activating postural muscles in three dimensions, helping to de-rotate and correct the abnormal curvature of the spine.

BREATHING TECHNIQUES

Specialized breathing techniques known as Angular Rotational Breathing (ARB) are incorporated to improve lung function, increase rib mobility, and promote postural correction.

POSTURAL AWARENESS

Patients are taught to be aware of their scoliotic posture and to make conscious efforts to maintain proper alignment throughout daily activities.

BRACE EDUCATION (if applicable)

For those patients who may require bracing, we provide knowledge and support for wearing schedule, positioning, exercises to improve brace effectiveness and physical activity for corrective spinal alignment.

EDUCATION AND SELF-CARE

Patient education is the most important part of Schroth therapy. We provided detailed and clear information regarding scoliosis, so that when it comes to your curve you are the smartest person in the room.
